Personal Anecdote from Ken:
While studying alone at my favorite place in San Diego, UC San Diego Geisel Library, at midnight one day in October 2022, a leader from Hermanos Unidos (HU) found me and reached out. HU is centered in its pillars of Academic Excellence, Community Service, & Networking (Social or Professionally) for advancement of Latinos in higher education. I was impressed by the great leadership that this club had despite being still a young organization in campus (~6 years). Being a general member of this club made my last year at UCSD (2022-2023) very fun and inspiring. Thank you HU. Your members are too kind. Stay safe.
Personal Anecdote from Ken:
The Chancellor's Associates Scholars Program (CASP) at UC San Diego equipped me for success upon transferring with a 2-year scholarship with housing (2018-2020). However, CASP is not just a club or scholarship source, once joining the CASP Familia one is always a member. CASP has such dedicated and empowering staff. Thank you CASP staff - Belinda, Ria, Kimberly, & Karen. Also thanks to several of the peer mentors that have helped me in the journey.
Personal Anecdote from Ken:
The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to increasing the number of Latino STEM professionals in the USA by helping Latino individuals unlock their full potential through leadership, service, and community. This non-profit organization has taught me tremendously about professionalism and the industry world. I joined as an official member through SHPE-Connect in July 2014 and have served in officer positions at the San Diego City College chapter (2015-2018). I also joined the SHPE chapter at the University of California, San Diego (2018-2023) as a general member. Although SHPE cannot follow me at every phase of my career, I believe that SHPE is a great resource to learn from, and I tend to stay involved whenever my time allows it. Thank you SHPE.
Personal Anecdote from Ken:
According to their homepage, the Math Engineering Science Achievement (MESA) Program is a consortium joined by various states in the US that hopes to improve academic outcome to underrepresented STEM students. I started my college journey with the San Diego Community College District (SDCCD) in September 2012 during my last year at Point Loma High School for nearly completing my US A-G coursework a year early. A year later (2013), I walked in the San Diego City College (SDCC) campus as a full time student. In September 2013 while searching for STEM resources, I walked into the MESA center, where I met an extraordinary leader and the director of the MESA Program at SDCC - Dr. Rafael Alvarez. Participating in MESA has taught me how to reinforce my foundation for learning and has encouraged me to become a better leader for the communities that I am a part of. As a result, I have striven to deliver
excellence in my academics with less fear. Thank you MESA for having me be a part of the program while at SDCC (2013-2018).
